Mechanical Trade

Within the mechanical trades you have three choices. Whatever your interest or skills, there’s plenty on offer and you’ll also get a truck licence.

Please note:  There will be no apprenticeships available for Mechanical Fitter/Machinists and Vehicle Body Builders in 2010.  Though if you’re interested in a Mechanical Trade, try applying for a Motor Mechanic apprenticeship.

Motor Mechanic

Interested in what goes on under the bonnet? Then this is the apprenticeship for you. You’ll learn how various systems and components operate, as well as how to maintain, test, diagnose, repair and overhaul them. Once qualified, you’ll get to work on a wide range of motors used in our industry and use your practical skills to fix and maintain heavy vehicles.

Mechanical Fitter/Machinist

Want to build your skills and knowledge in a wide range of mechanical applications? During this apprenticeship you’ll discover how to operate a variety of machines to custom build or repair metal work - special components that are used on EnergyAustralia’s network that can’t be bought or easily obtained. You’ll become skilled at processes including turning, boring, milling, planing, shaping, slotting, grinding and drilling.

Vehicle Body Builder

This is a great apprenticeship if you’re interested in building, repairing and customising motor vehicles. You’ll learn how to interpret technical drawings, build vehicle bodies from scratch, and gain useful skills in welding and fabrication. When you’ve graduated you’ll be able to work on everything from simple plant trailers to multi-million dollar mobile generators.

  • "I'm a first year motor mechanic; I'm just at the beginning stage of it.

At the moment, we're learning skills in the workshop, just a lot of general things like wiring, cutting on machines and filing.

The atmosphere is really good, the people I work with are really good and the fact that you’re helping out the community, and probably that’s the best thing about working at EnergyAustralia."

  • "I'm from out of Sydney and moved down when I got accepted. I thought it would've been hard to adjust, but everyone at EnergyAustralia was so friendly and welcoming, it was quite easy to settle in.

The apprenticeship exceeded my expectations. You learn how to operate various machines to repair metal work and you build special metal components that can’t be bought or easily obtained.

The level of training is what really appealed to me, there is unlimited number of courses that you can do to always keep improving yourself.

If you had a chance to do this, you wouldn’t pass it up."

  • "I really enjoy working at EnergyAustralia. It's an excellent company to work for, and they really look after their apprentices.

The working conditions are very good, the team environment is welcoming, you get provided with high quality equipment and the trainers are always helpful.

The best thing about the vehicle body builder apprenticeship is every day you do something different. I've had a really broad range of training and experience, from interpreting drawings, building vehicle bodies from scratch and gaining skills in welding and fabrication.
    I'd definitely recommend joining EnergyAustralia
    as an apprentice."
